Gohar World and Super Yaya’s Flower Bouquet Bags Are a Stylish, Summery Treat
When Nadia and Laila Gohar launched the first collection of their surrealist
When Nadia and Laila Gohar launched the first collection of their surrealist home brand, Gohar World, one object, in particular, kept flying out of stock. It was a baguette-shaped bag in black silk, meant to fit the precise measurements of the bread loaf—and the bread loaf only.
The sisters soon realized they were on to something. "We are very into these very singular use objects that are in no way, shape or form necessities, but we think that they sort of make life a little bit more exciting," Laila tells Vogue. So, from their Chinatown studio, they began dreaming up a new variation of their cult design.
Several, in fact. This week, Gohar World released their next set of hyper-specific stylish carriers in collaboration with Super Yaya, the brand of Lebanese-born, Cote D’Ivoire-raised designer Rym Beydoun. Two are dedicated solely to flowers: one, for larger bouquets you’d gift at a dinner party; the second, for a smaller collection of stems you might source on a trip to the grocery store to place in a little vase at home. A third serves as a bottle bag for wine, and finally, there's a colorful picnic basket. "They all fit well within that universe," Laila says.
The collection first blossomed back in January, when Nadia and Laila sent Beydoun a prototype for a flower carrier and asked for her thoughts. The designer recalled a painting by Diego Rivera, in which a man carries a basket on his back tied with a piece of fabric. Feeling inspired, Beydoun suggested adding a ribbon. "I thought that was very nice, the contrast between fabric and weave," she says. A creative back-and-forth ensured, and eventually, the trio found themselves with multiple concepts in production. "We started thinking: What would people use in the summertime to carry things to and from the market?" Nadia says.
They settled on a jewel-tone and pastel palette, perfect for the summer months and the entertaining opportunities that came with it. Each bazin (a type of cotton fabric) creation was first hand-dyed by artisans in the Ivory Coast and then hand-assembled in Beirut; by Beydoun's estimate, each item takes a full day to put together. As park picnics and al fresco dinners begin in earnest, the Gohars and Beydoun are offering a selection of bags that marry fashion, function, and, well, a little bit of fun.
